During the free, 60-minute program, seminar leader Sergeant Preston Taylor will discuss items that need to be safely put away, how thieves access personal information, what thieves target at open houses (and how to thwart them), and safety tips before and after showing a property. Sgt. Taylor is a police officer in Northern Michigan and certified instructor for defensive tactics.
Brokers are also encouraged to visit other websites for resources focused on the safety of both real estate professionals and consumers. In addition to the NAR site, the Northwest Multiple Listing Service offers an "Alerts" tab on its website that contains member reports of fraudulent buyers, real estate scams and suspicious activities.
Additional resources are available from The Real Estate Safety Council, which offers safety tips, posters, forms and other helpful information to minimize risks, and procedures to follow if a crime occurs. The Safety Council is a nonprofit group of real estate industry leaders and law enforcement representatives who are dedicated to improving safety in the workplace.
