DOL Glitch Leaves Thousands with Expired Driver License
December 2014 - NWREporter
An estimated 18,000 Washington residents may be driving with an expired driver license, according to Department of Licensing officials.
A glitch in the computer system is blamed for preventing some drivers from getting a renewal notice. The problem dates to 2009, but DOL officials thought it had been fixed. They recently discovered thousands of drivers had not received renewal notices.
DOL spokesperson Brad Benfield told KING 5 news the department has changed the way it issues renewal notices and believes the problem has been fixed for anyone whose license is set to expire after September 2015. Drivers whose license expires between now and then may not get a notice.
Washington began offering online license renewals in 2004. Drivers who renewed online or by mail before their latest renewal and believe they paid a late fee can seek a refund via DOL's customer service center (firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 360-902-3900).
