San Francisco edged out Seattle as the best U.S. city for female entrepreneurs, according to rankings based on various criteria, including education levels, unemployment rates, median incomes and percentage of women-owned businesses.

Researchers from NerdWallet Inc., a financial planning website, declared Seattle highly entrepreneurial and one of the most highly educated cities.  They calculated Seattle has 12.5 businesses per 100 residents, with women owning around four of those businesses. Fifty of the most populous U.S. cities were included in the assessment of entrepreneurial climates.

The survey, conducted in commemoration of Women's History Month, acknowledged even though women make up a majority of those enrolled in college, they're still underrepresented as entrepreneurs.

Concurrent with the report, NerdWallet release a compilation of tips from small businesswomen. Respondents cited a lack of female mentorship and networking opportunities for women as barriers.
